What is Ecdysterone?

When a supplement with bold claims begins to gain attention from both the fitness community and the media, it becomes necessary to take a critical look at all the scientific literature, data, and anecdotal evidence regarding it.

Recently, the mainstream media and a growing number of personal anecdotes have drawn more attention to what ecdysterone is, as well as the benefits ecdysterone can have for humans [1].

Ecdysteroids, such as ecdysterone and turkesterone, are mainly consumed by athletes or bodybuilders seeking to enhance their performance.

They are especially attractive to athletes who don’t want to deal with the harmful side effects of anabolic steroids. This is one reason why ecdysterone is marketed as a ‘natural alternative to steroids’ [2].

This is certainly true in the case of ecdysterone.

Ecdysteorne Vs Steroids

First and foremost, it’s necessary to clarify that ecdysterone is technically not a steroid – at least, not the kind that will get you arrested or prohibited from competing in professional sporting events.

Ecdysterone is a naturally occurring hormone found in plants, fungi, and arthropod insects, which belongs to a large family of over 200 similar substances called ecdysteroids [2, 3].

Generally, you’ll find that this product is sold as an over the counter supplement under various names, such as beta-ecdysterone, 20-beta-hydroxyecdysterone, and beta-ecdysone [3].

While the hype around Ecdysterone has certainly surged in the last few years, studies have been conducted on it since the 1960s.

The former Soviet Union performed the first pharmacological tests on rodents to determine adverse effects of phytoecdysteroids on vertebrates.

Plant Steroids

Studies aside, many cultures in central Asia have traditionally used plants containing ecdysterone and other ecdysteroids like turkesterone to obtain certain health benefits. These plants include Rhaponticum Carthamoides, Maral Root, Cordyceps Sinensis, Achyranthes Bidentata, and Serratula [4].

When used responsibly, ecdysterone often improves athletic performance in a comparable manner to other anabolic steroids like dianabol or trenbolone. Ecdysterone has a similar structure to testosterone.

However, it doesn’t function in exactly the same manner.

Ecdysterone doesn’t bind to the same steroid receptors in the body as testosterone [5]. Instead, it exerts its physiological effects by binding to the estrogen receptors in the human body.

Ecdysterone doesn’t impact the hormone levels in your body, which means you don’t need to use post-cycle therapy drugs like Clomid or Nolvadex to restore testosterone levels to their natural baseline.

Benefits of Ecdysterone

Many people in the fitness community and the mainstream media have raised over the safety and effectiveness of ecdysterone. However, research shows that it is the real deal.

Here are some of the biggest benefits of ecdysterone:

  • Increased muscle mass and strength
  • Decreased body fat levels
  • Faster recovery from workouts
  • Enhanced quality of sleep

According to multiple studies, ecdysterone can match or even surpass the physiological effects of steroids like dianabol and trenbolone. However, this natural steroid alternative does not have any harmful side effects, such as elevated blood pressure, rashes, or high liver toxicity [2].

If we look more closely at the supposed benefits of ecdysterone, we see that plenty of studies have found ecdysterone usage to lead to increased lean muscle mass, improved strength, enhanced endurance and stamina, and even enhanced recovery time.

The gains in lean muscle mass and strength can be attributed to greater levels of protein synthesis [9].

Ecdysterone usage in some human test subjects has even revealed elevated levels of protein synthesis as much as 20%. The amount of lean mass and strength gained from a cycle of ecdysterone can be compared to what steroids such as dianabol could produce in human subjects [2, 7].

Losing weight and shedding stubborn bodyfat is another potent benefit of ecdysterone. Researchers in Russia observed a group of human subjects following a three-week exercise regimen involving both resistance and endurance training.

The subjects took a daily dose of ecdysterone. The results were incredible: the subjects lost about 14% of their body fat on average [8].

Studies also show that athletes have greater endurance and stamina while cycling ecdysterone.

This is good news not just for bodybuilders and strength athletes, but also for swimmers, track runners, or any athlete that could use more energy while competing.

A study providing evidence of this was conducted by Russian scientists, where two groups of runners were watched closely for a period of twenty days. One group was given a daily dose of dianabol, and the other group of runners took ecdysterone.

At the end of the study, the data indicated that the stamina of the athletes taking ecdysterone increased between 10-15% [9].

Additionally, both human and animal test subjects who cycled ecdysterone showed faster recovery times from intense exercise, as well as deeper sleep, which goes hand in hand with the gains in muscular hypertrophy mentioned earlier [2].

Is Ecdysterone a Steroid?

Despite the fact that ecdysterone belongs to a class of compounds called ecdysteroids, it’s actually not classified as an anabolic steroid, nor is it treated as such under the law.

Improved strength, increases in muscle mass, heightened stamina, and rapid recovery are all effects that researchers have discovered as a result of studying ecdysterone, which are strikingly similar to those gained from anabolic steroids.

These benefits come about as a result of increasing the activity of polyribosomes – the cytoplasmic parts in cells where protein synthesis occurs [2, 4].

There is another big reason why ecdysterone isn’t classified as an anabolic steroid: it isn’t toxic to the liver [2]. Hepatic damage is one of the most common side effects related to anabolic steroid usage, next to shrinking of the gonads and hair loss.

These side effects have never been reported with long-term ecdysterone usage.

The reason for this is because of the molecular structure of ecdysterone – it does not bind to vertebrate steroid receptors, even though it is extremely similar to other anabolic compounds.

Is Ecdysterone Safe?

Before purchasing a supplement designed to improve athletic performance, you have to make sure it is safe to consume and won’t negatively impact your health.

Numerous studies have shown that ecdysterone is generally safe when used responsibly and with the correct dosing guidelines. However, an optimal dosage will depend on a number of individual factors related to body composition, such as an individual’s height, weight, and tolerance to similar substances.

For this reason, it’s vital to speak with a doctor before conducting any research on ecdysterone supplements, and to also start with smaller doses to monitor the effects.

Unlike traditional anabolic steroids, the side effects tend to be minimal or even non-existent.

This makes it a great option for bodybuilders and athletes who want to improve their performance, and not be burdened with the adverse effects of using anabolic steroids, such as liver infections, increased blood pressure, mood swings, and rashes.

We can also look to the data from one of the many human trials outlining ecdysterone’s low risk profile. A 2006 study was conducted where researchers observed the effects of ecdysterone and select other compounds on training adaptations.

45 male participants who were already physically active on a regular basis were selected to take part. One of those groups took just 0.03 grams of ecdysterone once daily.

When the study concluded, data showed that the men had improved results on mainly two lifts – the bench press and the leg press. Ultimately, no adverse side effects were reported [11].

If you choose to do research with ecdysterone, it’s recommended that you prioritize safety, and purchase a clean, tested product, like AML ecdysterone.

Also, be sure to consult with a physician before starting any sort of drug or supplement regimen, in order to ensure that your body doesn’t have any negative reactions to new substances like ecdysterone.

 Is Ecdysterone Legal?

Although there are studies proposing ecdysterone can confer anabolic effects comparable with popular steroids like dianabol, it is completely legal to buy over the counter at multiple online retailers.

As mentioned above, while the chemical structure of ecdysterone and popular steroids are nearly identical, they aren’t the same thing.

One of the possible reasons for why ecdysterone is not classified in the same way as anabolic steroids, is because it has no effect on the hormone levels of mammals. With that said, ecdysterone remains to be classified as an anabolic steroid, which means you can buy, sell, manufacture, possess, and consume ecdysterone lawfully in the United States [12].

Is Ecdysterone a Banned Substance?

We’ve established that ecdysterone is a legal supplement, as it isn’t part of the Controlled Drugs and Substances List. However, that may change in the future.

The police may not care that you want to order ecdysterone online to get a boost in the gym, but WADA might.

Otherwise known as the World Anti-Doping Agency, the WADA is responsible for determining which substances can be allowed to be consumed and used in professional competitive sports, from bodybuilding to Olympic weightlifting.

After seeing the results of a thorough study conducted in 2019 on how Ecdysterone affects athletic performance, it was suggested to WADA that Ecdysterone be considered to be placed on the list of prohibited substances [13].

Ecdysterone has yet to be formally banned from professional sports.

However, WADA has decided to put it on their watchlist of monitored substances. In the meantime, rest assured that Ecdysterone is completely legal, and consider taking advantage of the opportunity to try it out while you can.

Ecdysterone and Bodybuilding

Some supplements are often touted as being far more effective than they actually are. Ecdysterone is different: the collection of anecdotal evidence and scientific data from both human and animal trials shows that most claims about this compound are indeed true.

Ecdysterone truly is a natural steroid alternative that can offer a number of performance-enhancing benefits, while avoiding the harsh side effects of anabolic steroids, pro-hormones, and even SARMs.

Research that we’ve referenced in this article has primarily observed the effects of ecdysterone cycles between 8-12 weeks, with no negative side effects being noticed.

With that said, research has yet to put forth a standard optimal dosage for ecdysterone.

In addition, ecdysterone is far more accessible than anabolic steroids, in that it’s available as both a powder and in capsule form, thus eliminating the need to use needles like with anabolic steroids.

Based on the data available, our recommendation to researchers would be to keep cycles within the range of 8-12 weeks and to not exceed two cycles per year.

The studies referenced here also have analyzed the effects of daily ecdysterone dosages ranging from 30 mg per day, to 2 g per day [2, 8]. Since most ecdysterone supplements for bodybuilding are dosed at 500 mg per capsule, we would suggest not exceeding 2 grams per day.
