What is Turkesterone?

Originally isolated around 1975 in Russia, turkesterone has only recently experienced a surge in popularity, owed in part to being mentioned on the Joe Rogan podcast, and being called out by the mainstream media [1, 2].

Like humans, plants also produce several different hormones that serve specific functions.

One of these is turkesterone, which is commonly extracted from plants such as Leuzea Carthamoides, Rhaponticum, Stemmacantha Uniflora – most of which grow in Siberia and Bulgaria, as well as central Asian countries like Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kazakhstan [3].

Turkesterone is grouped into a larger family of plant hormones called ecdysteroids, of which another popular bodybuilding supplement, ecdysterone, is a part of.

This ‘natural plant steroid’ has garnered increased attention in recent years due to the supposed benefits it can produce in humans for muscle strength, size, endurance, and recovery [3, 4].

Although more than 200 different ecdysteroids have been discovered, ecdysterone and turkesterone are some of the most studied.

Data has revealed that these natural plant hormones can also produce anabolic effects similar to those seen from testosterone. What’s particularly interesting in the case of turkesterone and ecdysteroids, is that while they can produce powerful anabolic effects, the androgenic effects of steroids are non-existent.

As a result, ecdysteroids don’t cause fluctuations or damage to the hormonal system of mammals or humans, since they don’t actually bind to androgen receptors in the way that typical anabolic or androgenic substances do.

This is one reason why they’re labeled and marketed as ‘natural steroid alternatives’, and why they are so highly contested and sought after [5].

What is German Pharma?

While searching for the best turkesterone supplements, our team discovered German Pharma.

German Pharma is a sports supplement company based in the United Kingdom, with warehouses located in both the UK and the US. Their main focus is on producing supplements to enhance athletic abilities, as well as improve overall health and wellness.

German Pharma stands apart from several other supplement brands due to the fact that their products are all lab-tested. Also, most of their capsule products are made from plant-based ingredients instead of gelatin.

German Pharma offers worldwide shipping. They also accept all major credit cards, such as Mastercard, Visa, and American Express.

Benefits of Turkesterone

You might be thinking that the claims made about turkesterone’s effectiveness are outlandish… but the science and anecdotal evidence says otherwise.

Turkesterone can produce a number of potent effects for both bodybuilders and athletes partaking in all sorts of activities. Some data even suggests that ecdysteroids like turkesterone may be as powerful as some steroids, such as dianabol [6].

Strength And Stamina

Firstly, both turkesterone and closely related ecdysteroids like ecdysterone have been found to produce remarkable strength and stamina gains.

Research on both animal and human subjects has shown that protein synthesis is boosted with the consumption of turkesterone. In some cases, it was found that the rate of protein synthesis rose nearly 20% [3].

Closely tied into this, is the fact that skeletal muscle mass and muscle protein have been seen to increase with turkesterone consumption [7, 8].

Recovery From Workouts

One of the benefits of turkesterone that it has been traditionally used for in cultures around central Asia, is that it can speed up the healing process in wounds, and contribute to epidermis regeneration [3, 9].

If you’re looking to get shredded faster, and cut down on undesirable body fat, then you’ll be happy to hear that turkesterone can help in this regard as well.

This is because turkesterone improves nitrogen retention, and contributes to a better protein metabolism profile with reduced protein catabolism and increased anabolism. Lipid absorption and carbohydrate metabolism is also reduced by turkesterone, which can lead to fat loss and better weight maintenance.

Increased ATP Synthesis

And finally, one of the most powerful benefits of ecdysteroids like turkesterone and ecdysterone, is a marked increase in ATP synthesis.

In turn, an athlete can expect to see improvements in their stamina and endurance levels, especially when it comes to aerobic exercises.

Research has shown adaptogenic properties particularly in swimmers, which increased the amount of time they could remain moving in the water by up to 22%. It was also found to improve the ability of mice to run for up to 32% longer before reaching a point of fatigue [10].

Turkesterone Side Effects

Before we dive into the side effects from turkesterone, it needs to be pointed out that there have not been any documented human trials for turkesterone.

With that said, the most common anecdotally reported side effects with turkesterone are nausea and stomach discomfort if an amount over 2,000 milligrams is taken [5].

As such, we wouldn’t recommend exceeding a daily dose of 500 milligrams.

Studies On Side Effects

Apart from that, however, data has shown that ecdysteroids have little to no side effects on humans. We can refer to a well-documented trial conducted in 2006, with the aim of monitoring the effects of the ecdysteroid ecdysterone and select other compounds on training adaptations for athletic males.

Again, this study on ecdysterone is being referenced because of the lack of data from human trials involving turkesterone. During the trial, 45 participants were split up into three groups, each taking a different compound.

One group of trial participants took just 30 milligrams of ecdysterone once a day.

While the results of the study showed that the strength and stamina of the participants increased, it was also shown that no negative side effects resulting from the use of ecdysterone were reported in any of the participants [11].

As mentioned earlier in this article, ecdysteroids like turkesterone have become more popular due to their lack of side effects, while also conferring many of the benefits gained from the use of anabolic steroids.

Turkesterone Vs Steroids

A major side effect caused by anabolics tends to be a depression of the hormonal system, which can sometimes even lead to permanently lowered levels of natural testosterone production.

However, with ecdysteroids like turkesterone and ecdysterone, this is not the case.

Cycling turkesterone will not cause testosterone levels to fall drastically once a cycle is over, which therefore also eliminates the need for a post-cycle therapy, or PCT [5, 12].

In general, neither ecdysterone nor turkesterone cause the side effects normally seen with anabolic steroid use.

One of the main reasons for this is because of the molecular structure of ecdysteroids. Even though they possess a similar structure to anabolic steroids, they don’t actually bind to the steroid receptors in vertebrates [6].

One more important point to note is that that these compounds, such as ecdysterone and turkesterone, are not toxic to mammals [5], so there’s no danger of overdosing.

Is Turkesterone Legal?

You might have been asking yourself – if turkesterone is so powerful, and it can supposedly produce results on par with steroids, then is it legal to purchase and use?

As of 2023, turkesterone is legal and available as an over-the-counter supplement.

This is a key difference to note between turkesterone and traditional anabolic and androgenic steroids.

As mentioned in this guide, turkesterone is not classified as an anabolic steroid, and is therefore completely legal to purchase, possess, or consume in the United States and most other developed nations.

However, the governing bodies of professional sports are not so lenient. In 2019, WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) funded a study conducted by German scientists on the ecdysteroid ecdysterone.

When the results of their research concluded that ecdysterone did indeed produce steroid-like gains, it was suggested that both ecdysterone and turkesterone be included in the List of Banned Substances.

Although this has not yet occurred, as of 2020, turkesterone was added to the list of substances in the WADA Monitoring Program. We’ve still yet to see if it’ll be officially banned in professional sports or not [13].

If turkesterone is added to the list of banned substances by WADA, this would only prohibit athletes competing in professional sports from using turkesterone, and would not involve the authorities if an individual is found selling, buying, possessing, or consuming turkesterone.

Turkesterone Dosage

Due to the fact that no human trials have been conducted on turkesterone, a science-backed dosing protocol has yet to be issued.

However, research on nearly identical compounds, such as ecdysterone, has shown that gains in muscle mass, stamina, and strength have been found even with particularly low dosages of 30mg per day [3].

When compared with ecdysterone, turkesterone has been found to produce even more potent effects.

With that said, the recommended dosage for turkesterone shown on product labels will be lower when compared to product labels for ecdysterone supplements. Our suggestion is to with your dosage is to monitor the effects closely, while keeping it under 500 milligrams per day.

Like ecdysterone, the dose can be taken all at once, or split in two. This amount can also be taken for cycles lasting 8 to 12 weeks [4].

Another reason why athletes may prefer to consume ecdysteroids like turkesterone over traditional anabolics, is because steroids are normally administered with the use of a syringe, which is typically a nuisance.

Even though oral steroids and pro-hormones might be seen as safer alternatives, the reality is that these substances have also been shown to produce harmful side effects, even if they’re not immediately apparent.
